Formula E (Elastic): ArtCenter Design Competition

Formula E (Elastic) is a long-running design competition at ArtCenter College of Design, originating in the 1980s and held annually since 2006 within the Graduate Industrial Design program. The challenge focuses on designing and testing race vehicles powered only by stored elastic energy, emphasizing iterative prototyping, material constraints, and performance-driven design.

Prototype 0: Defining the Primary Axis

Prototype Zero focused on selecting a horizontal rotational axis and establishing how elastic energy from the rubber band could drive axle rotation. This stage clarified the basic driving logic before physical testing.

Prototype 2: Drive and Steering Development

In Prototype 2, the rear axle was confirmed as the primary drive system. Steering design was introduced, testing a 90-degree turning range to balance maneuverability and stability.

Prototype 3: Revising Proportions and Structure

Prototype 3 reworked the vehicle’s proportions and structural layout, resulting in improved speed and stability. This was the first prototype to perform consistently well during track testing.

Prototype 4: Braking Exploration

Prototype 4 focused on braking solutions, using foam board and cardboard for rapid testing to evaluate stopping performance before final fabrication

Final Model: Steering and Performance Tuning

The final model phase involved multiple test runs to fine-tune steering behavior, adjusting tilt and vertical angles to identify the most effective performance setup.
